For many people, tax season is a stressful few months each year. For Tax Resolution Services, it’s just one piece of a much bigger mission.
Since launching his business in 2017, founder Abdi Mohamed has built Tax Resolution Services into a year-round resource for individuals and small businesses navigating everything from bookkeeping and tax preparation to resolving complex tax issues with the IRS. Along the way, he’s grown from a part-time entrepreneur working another full-time job to a business owner serving more than 120 clients annually.
“I started part-time while I was working at Allina Health,” he said. “Once I had enough clients, I decided to focus on the business full-time.”
Today, Tax Resolution Services operates from the Franklin East Building, one of Redesign’s commercial properties on Franklin Avenue, where the business continues to grow while serving clients throughout the Seward community and beyond.
Building Trust in the Community
While Tax Resolution Services is open to everyone, much of the firm’s work supports Somali, Ethiopian, Eritrean, and other East African community members, many of whom are also small business owners.
The business works with restaurants, pharmacies, and other entrepreneurs as well as individuals, providing trusted support in a complicated and confusing area.
“When people have problems with the IRS, they often don’t know where to turn,” he explained. “That’s where I come in.”
Whether helping someone establish a payment plan, negotiate relief from penalties, or simply understand their options, Tax Resolution Services works to reduce stress while helping clients move forward.
A Business That Grew Alongside Its Space
Tax Resolution Services started in a lower-level office in the Franklin East Building. When a first-floor, street-facing storefront became available in Redesign’s building, the move proved transformative.
“After moving upstairs, my client base increased about 15 percent,” he said.
In addition to providing space for the business, Redesign also worked with Mohamed on Marketing support and helped him access funding for new exterior signage through the City of Minneapolis’ Storefront Improvement Program, an investment that improved visibility while reducing his costs.
The new location made it easier for clients to find the business, while the professional storefront helped build credibility with new customers walking along Franklin Avenue.
Looking Ahead
The next chapter for Tax Resolution Services is focused on expansion.
The business recently transitioned from a sole proprietorship to an S Corporation and is working to expand its tax representation services by partnering with an attorney. Doing so would allow the firm to represent clients through additional legal proceedings when tax disputes extend beyond the IRS.
The goal is to provide even more comprehensive support for small businesses navigating complicated financial and legal challenges.
At the same time, Mohamed continues to diversify his services, including bookkeeping and sales tax support, to create a stable, year-round business that meets the evolving needs of clients.

For all the technical expertise required in tax law, Mohamed believes successful client relationships come down to something much simpler: making people feel heard. That starts by listening, understanding each client’s unique situation, and helping them take the next step with confidence.
